Gratitude Letter to a Friend: Example & Prompts
A friendship is rarely defined by one grand gesture. It is built from rides home, unhurried phone calls, private jokes, and the person who stayed when the day went sideways. Begin with one of those moments.
A gratitude letter example
This example is fictional. Borrow its shape, not its memories—replace every detail with something true.
Dear Maya,
I keep thinking about the Tuesday you arrived with coffee and sat on my kitchen floor while I tried to make sense of a terrible week. You did not rush me or try to fix everything. You stayed—and somehow made me laugh before you left.
That afternoon is one example of what your friendship has given me: room to be honest, and the reminder that I do not have to carry every hard thing alone. Thank you for noticing, for showing up, and for knowing when kindness means simply being there.
Love, Sam
Four prompts to make it personal
You only need one true, specific memory to begin.
- 1What ordinary moment made you realize this friendship was important?
- 2When did your friend help without making you feel like a burden?
- 3What do they understand about you that few other people do?
- 4Which part of your life is better because you have shared it with them?
How to make it sound like you
Return to a scene. Place your friend in a real moment: where you were, what happened, and what they did.
Name what it gave you. Say whether their friendship brought courage, relief, laughter, belonging, or something else only you can name.
Use your natural voice. If you tease each other, warmth can include humor. If you are quiet together, the letter can be quiet too.
Before you send it: If the letter could be sent to any friend without changing a detail, it is not finished yet.
